Thalapathy Vijay has taken a big decision as soon as he became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He has ordered the closure of 717 government-run TASMAC liquor shops located within 500 meters of religious places, educational institutions and bus stands. The government order states that this should be followed in the next two weeks.
There is often discussion about liquor shops in Tamil Nadu. The people there had been demanding for a long time that the liquor shops located near schools, colleges and religious places should be closed, but the governments were not able to take any action due to the income earned from them. Although every party, be it DMK or AIADMK, had promised prohibition in Tamil Nadu in their election manifesto, but concrete steps could not be taken on it.
In the year 2023, MK Stalin’s government ordered the closure of about 500 government liquor shops after deaths due to alcohol. Let us tell you that there are more than 5000 government liquor shops in Tamil Nadu, which have a revenue of about Rs 40 thousand crores.
Among the shops that were closed by the Stalin government were those located near religious places and schools and colleges. Apart from this, a decision was taken to remove those people who had objection that the shops should be removed from their area. It was decided to close 61 shops in Chennai alone. Apart from this, 31 shops were closed in Kanchipuram and 21 in Madurai.
Jayalalitha started closing liquor shops gradually in the year 2016. Successive state governments have been arguing that complete prohibition would open the way for illegal liquor, which would lead to loss of lives. Let us tell you that during the Stalin government, about 60 people died due to spurious liquor.
