Big decision of Yogi government: Smart meters will now work like postpaid in UP, prepaid system ended, now bill will come at the end of the month

Lucknow, 5 May. To provide relief to the electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh from the technical problems faced by smart prepaid meters, the government has taken a big and relief decision. Now all the smart meters in the state will function like normal postpaid meters. Energy Minister A.K. Sharma, in an important meeting held with senior departmental officials on Monday, gave instructions to end the prepaid system with immediate effect.

Complaints were being received continuously from the electricity consumers that when the recharge in the smart prepaid meter was over, the power would suddenly go off and due to server problems, it took a long time to restore the power despite recharge. Keeping in mind these technical constraints and public problems, the Energy Minister has decided to run smart meters on postpaid mode.

After the new order, consumers will no longer be forced to recharge in advance. Now, like normal meters, a bill will be issued after using electricity for a month, which consumers will be able to deposit within the stipulated time limit. Energy Minister A.K. Sharma clarified that the main objective of the government is to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers and reduce their problems.

During the meeting, the Energy Minister directed the departmental officers to make necessary changes in the software as soon as possible so that consumers can get the benefits of this new system immediately. Besides, he also stressed on making monitoring of smart meters more effective to prevent electricity theft and reduce line losses.
