India’s strength in the automobile industry is no longer limited to the domestic market. Indian cars are now reaching developed countries like Africa, Middle East, Latin America, Europe and even Japan. India’s car exports have set a new record as per the figures for the financial year 2025-26 (FY26).
According to data available under HS Code 8703, India exported passenger vehicles worth around $9 billion in FY26. This is a whopping 25 percent increase over the previous year. Also, according to the SIAM report, 9.05 lakh passenger vehicles were exported from India, which is the highest figure ever.
South Africa became the country that exported the most cars from India. Cars worth $1.50 billion were shipped to this country, accounting for 16.6 percent of total exports. Indian cars are becoming popular there due to the demand for affordable, fuel-efficient and robust vehicles.

The second place is Saudi Arabia, where India exported vehicles worth $1.26 billion. In third place is Mexico, where Indian cars worth $1.12 billion were sold. South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Mexico together account for nearly 43 percent of India’s total car exports.
Interestingly, Japan has reached the fourth position. India exported cars worth $0.81 billion to Japan in FY26. Japan is considered one of the most stringent markets in the world for quality, safety and reliability. Therefore, the acceptance of Indian vehicles in Japan is considered a major achievement for India.

Apart from this, the demand for Indian cars is also increasing in countries like UAE, Chile, Spain, Peru, Sri Lanka and UK. From this it appears that India’s exports are not dependent on any one region but are expanding globally.
Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen are developing India as a global manufacturing hub. Indian cars are becoming more accepted worldwide due to lower production costs, improved quality and international safety standards. Hence, India is now becoming not only a large automobile market but also an important center of global automobile manufacturing and exports.
