UP Solar Energy: Under the leadership of Yogi government, Uttar Pradesh has made an important achievement in the field of domestic rooftop solar under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. More than 9 lakh rooftop solar plants have been installed in the state and more than 3,000 MW (3 GW) solar energy capacity has been added. This achievement is an important step towards expansion of clean energy in the state, saving in domestic electricity bills, environmental protection and employment generation.
Comparison of domestic rooftop solar daily installation rates internationally
According to available data for the year 2026, about 1.89 GW of rooftop solar capacity was installed in Australia during January to June, which is an average of about 10.4 MW per day. The rate of residential solar installation in the US was about 13.1 MW per day in the first quarter and about 10.9 MW per day in the second quarter. At the same time, the growth of solar capacity installed on buildings in Germany averaged about 17.5 MW per day in the first half. In this international scenario, Uttar Pradesh’s sustained rate of adding about 9–10 MW of domestic rooftop solar capacity per day reflects the sheer scale of the state’s solar energy drive. This rate is around the average daily growth of Australia’s broader rooftop market.
Subsidy up to ₹ 1.08 lakh to eligible families
Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, a maximum subsidy of up to ₹ 1.08 lakh is being provided to the eligible beneficiaries as per the guidelines prescribed by the Central and Uttar Pradesh Government. As per the prescribed eligibility and procedure of the scheme, interested consumers can apply till 31 March 2027. This financial assistance is helpful in reducing the initial cost of setting up rooftop solar plants for domestic consumers.
More than 1 lakh direct employment from a network of more than 9,500 vendors
During this, UP NEDA Director Ravinder Singh said that through the network of more than 9,500 vendors in the state, more than 1 lakh direct employment opportunities are expected to be created in the installation of solar plants, supply of equipment, transportation, maintenance and related services. With the expansion of the solar sector, employment and self-employment opportunities are increasing for the youth and local economic activities are being encouraged.
Estimated capacity to generate approximately 1.35 crore units of clean electricity per day
On the basis of 3,000 MW rooftop solar capacity installed in the state, if an average power generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt per day is considered, then there is a capacity of about 1.35 crore units of clean power generation per day. At the nominal rate of ₹6.50 per unit, the estimated economic value of this electricity is approximately ₹8.78 crore per day and approximately ₹3,202 crore on an annual basis. Actual power generation and economic value may vary depending on sunlight, weather, plant efficiency and applicable electricity rates.
Promote local manufacturing and economic development
The expansion of rooftop solar encourages supply and manufacturing activities of solar modules, inverters, batteries, cables, mounting structures and other equipment. Local enterprises involved in installation and maintenance also gain new opportunities. Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is playing an important role in saving electricity expenditure, environmental protection, local employment generation and promoting energy self-reliance. Continuous expansion of rooftop solar can provide new momentum to the state’s green economy and clean energy based development.
