Big news: Now youth will never be able to buy cigarettes in Britain! The world’s strictest law will come into effect as soon as King Charles approves it.

The British government has taken a historic and very tough decision to save the country from diseases. Now the coming generation there will never be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco even if they want to. The government has passed the ‘Tobacco and Vapes Bill’ in both houses of the Parliament. Under this new law, it will be completely illegal to sell cigarettes to anyone born after 2008. It now just awaits the formal approval of King Charles III, after which it will become law across the UK—England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The picture of Britain will change from January 1, 2027

The British government had introduced this bill in 2024 and had kept it in its top priority. According to the new rules, this law will come into effect from January 1, 2027. The government’s aim is to create a ‘smoke-free generation’ which will never get addicted to nicotine. Britain’s Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed happiness over this and said that it is better to prevent the disease than to cure it. This will be the first generation that will be completely safe from the harm of tobacco.

Not only cigarettes, but also vaping is banned

In this law, not only ordinary cigarettes but also e-cigarettes i.e. vaping have been strictly imposed. Now there will be a complete ban on smoking near schools, hospitals and children’s playgrounds. Vaping will also not be allowed in many indoor venues. The biggest thing is that if you are sitting in a car with a child under 18 years of age, then vaping there can cost you heavily. However, some businessmen consider this decision to be too strict, but the government is adamant on its insistence.

Why was there a need for such a strict law?

Tobacco is proving fatal in Britain. According to government figures, every year around 76,000 people die there due to cancer, heart disease and lung problems. The government argues that most people start smoking as a hobby at a young age and are unable to quit it later even if they want to. 75% of people who smoke cigarettes in Britain admit that they wish they had never started. This is not only costing people their lives, but also putting a burden of billions on Britain’s Health Service (NHS).

New Zealand had shown the way, but retreated

Interestingly, New Zealand was the first country in the world to enact such a law. In December 2022, the Parliament there introduced a smoking ban for people born after 2008. But in 2024, there was a change in power and the new government withdrew this law citing tax income. Now Britain has become the largest country to follow this path.

War against smoking worldwide

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2004, Ireland became the first country to ban smoking in public places. Till 2007, only 10 countries had such rules, but by 2023, about 71% of the world’s population will be covered by some smoke-free law. This new step of Britain can now become an example for the whole world.
