Tezzbuzz Desk – A big step has been taken towards the introduction of satellite internet services in India. The way has now become clear for companies like Starlink, OneWeb and Reliance Jio to provide satellite broadband services. According to sources, the Group of Secretaries has approved the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding the allocation of satellite spectrum.
Before implementing this proposal, the Central Government will have to take final approval from the Cabinet. Earlier last year, TRAI had submitted its recommendations to the government regarding the allocation of satellite spectrum. Now after the approval of the Group of Secretaries, the way has been opened to move forward in this direction. Under the approved proposal, spectrum will be allotted to satellite broadband companies for a period of five years. In return, companies will have to pay 5 percent Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) of their Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR). However, there is a provision to keep the SUC low for companies providing satellite broadband services in rural and remote areas.
Satellite internet is being considered important for those areas of India where traditional fiber or mobile networks are difficult to reach. Fast internet connectivity can be provided through satellite in hilly, rural and remote areas. This is also expected to help in increasing digital connectivity. Many big companies are already active in the satellite internet sector in India. Preparations have been going on for a long time for the satellite internet services of Elon Musk's Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio. Once the policy related to spectrum allocation becomes clear, the process of starting commercial services may become easier for these companies.
However, it is too early to say when and at what price common users will get satellite internet service. For this, apart from cabinet approval, companies will have to complete necessary regulatory and licensing processes. If this proposal is finally implemented, a new option will be added to India's internet market. The advent of satellite broadband can increase Internet access, especially in areas where existing network infrastructure is limited. Also, due to increasing competition between companies like Starlink, OneWeb and Jio, there may be an impact on services and prices in the coming time.
