Big relief to GST taxpayers: Deadline for filing appeal extended, now last chance will be till 31st July – ..
There is a big good news for traders and companies who are preparing to appeal to resolve GST related disputes. The Central Government has extended the last date for filing appeals in the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) from June 30, 2026 to July 31, 2026. This decision has been taken due to the increased traffic and continuous technical problems on the GST portal in the last few days, which has brought great relief to thousands of taxpayers.
Heavy pressure and technical flaws on the portal
According to Finance Ministry data, around 30,000 appeals have been filed on the portal within the last 15 days. At times, the situation was such that more than 5,500 appeals were filed simultaneously in a single day, which created immense pressure on the system and slowed down the portal. Several chartered accountants and industry organizations had asked the government to extend the deadline as they were not able to file their appeals within the stipulated time due to technical problems.
What is GSTAT and why is it important?
The GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) is the principal judicial forum where taxpayers can challenge orders passed by GST authorities. If a trader or company feels that the department’s decision is not fair to their situation, they can seek relief through GSTAT. This extension will be applicable to all appeals under Section 112(1) and 112(3) of the GST Act.
Avoid haste on the last day, government advises
Although the government has given an additional time of one month, the Finance Ministry has given a clear advice to the taxpayers not to wait for the last date again. If all the taxpayers come to the portal together at the last moment, technical problems may arise once again. Tax experts believe that this one month time should be used to get your legal documents and necessary paperwork in order. Filing appeals on time without any haste is the only safe way to avoid technical errors.
