Desk. The Supreme Court of Pakistan has given a big relief to former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The Supreme Court on Tuesday arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan, who has been lodged in Adiala jail for 3 years. He has been ordered to be sent to Shifa International Hospital till the next hearing. The court has directed the authorities to ensure their treatment and medical examination. While issuing this order, a bench of three judges has asked to form a medical board for Imran Khan. Also, instructions have been given to take him to the hospital under tight security. The court also asked the authorities to ensure that law and order does not deteriorate outside the hospital.
During the hearing of cases related to Imran Khan's meetings and his treatment, Justice Shahid Waheed questioned why his complete medical records were not given. He said that the information given in the court was only a summary of the medical report. The court directed that the complete medical records of Imran Khan be submitted before the next hearing. The Court said that once the records are produced in the Court, they will no longer be confidential.
Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan also questioned whether the angiography mentioned in the medical report could be done in jail. Islamabad's Advocate General told the court that it could be done in a hospital outside the jail. Justice Shahid Waheed expressed concern about the medical report. He said that the report shows disturbances in Imran Khan's pulse and heart condition and it seems that his vital organs have started getting affected.
The court also raised questions on the restrictions on meetings between Imran Khan and his sisters. The judges said meeting family members is a fundamental right and asked why the Islamabad High Court's directions were not being followed. Advocate General of Islamabad told the court that Imran Khan has met his sisters 48 times in the last three years. After this, the Supreme Court asked for complete information about those meetings and records of the conversations with their children. PTI's lawyer Uzair Bhindari requested that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his sisters and doctors and undergo a complete medical examination at Shifa International Hospital.
The court also discussed that no statement would be made in the media after the meetings with Imran Khan. The judges said that PTI and the family will have to submit an affidavit confirming that there will be no conversation with the media after the meetings. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan stressed that Imran Khan's health and treatment should not be made an issue of political activity.
The Supreme Court also sought information about Imran Khan's cases, including the number of cases in which he is an undertrial, in which he has been convicted and in which his sentence has been stayed. The court directed the Adiala Jail authorities to provide records of meetings held with Imran Khan in the last three years and explain why the instructions of the Islamabad High Court were not followed.
Justice Shahid Waheed asked which of Imran Khan's sisters should be allowed to meet him. Lawyer Uzair Bhandari replied that Uzma Khan should be allowed to meet the PTI founder as she is a doctor. The Additional Attorney General argued that no notice was sent to the government in Uzma Khan's case. Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan said that the government's version would also be considered, as the Advocate General of Islamabad was already appearing in the court.
The Advocate General of Islamabad said that he had not appeared in the case related to Uzma Khan. Justice Afghan questioned why he did not raise the issue earlier in the day. Justice Shahid Waheed also reminded him that he was the senior-most law officer of Islamabad and asked him not to proceed in this manner. Justice Shahid Waheed further questioned why the petitioners wanted to take Imran Khan to a private hospital. Uzair Bhandari responded that Khan was often taken to PIMS for treatment. The judge then asked who would bear the expenses of the private hospital. Uzma Khan's lawyer said that she herself would bear the expenses of treatment in a private hospital.
The court also asked who would guarantee that Imran Khan's medical report would not be made public or used for political purposes. PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja assured the court that the political party would not use the medical report for political purposes and said the report was a matter between Khan, his doctors and his family.
The Supreme Court also directed PTI not to politicize the treatment of Imran Khan. The court ordered that doctors Faisal Sultan and Uzma Khan will stay with the PTI founder during treatment.
The court further directed that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his family once a week. The court also ordered that he remain in the hospital till the next hearing and PTI will bear all the expenses of the treatment in a private hospital. The hearing was adjourned till after the summer vacations and the Adiala jail authorities were directed to appear in the next hearing on September 16, 2026.
