Big relief to Vinesh Phogat, Supreme Court gives permission to participate in Asian Games trials
Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday allowed wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games 2026 to be held on May 30 and 31. Justice P.S. A bench of Justice Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe passed the order when they were hearing a petition filed by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) challenging the Delhi High Court order that had allowed Phogat to participate in the selection trials.
The bench told the counsel appearing for WFI, “Today at this juncture, when the High Court has given the order, hopes and expectations have increased. Asking them to go back home and saying that we cannot do anything will not be right. We are telling you this very frankly.”
The Supreme Court fixed the next hearing on this petition for next week. During the hearing, the Supreme Court said that Phogat’s case is of a different status because of his contribution to Indian sports. The court said, “Had it been anyone else, the matter would have been different. He has made the country proud.”
Along with this, the bench expressed concern over judicial interference in sports related matters and criticized the way the Delhi High Court handled the matter. The Supreme Court said it was troubled by the “manner and manner” in which the High Court investigated the case. The court warned that frequent and hasty judicial interference in sports administration could spoil the programs and have a negative impact on the entire sporting world.
During the hearing, Justice Narasimha said, “These are not matters of admission in medical colleges, these are matters related to national and international sports. It is not possible that the court should interfere in this way and spoil the entire program.
