Big shock from UP electricity department! Billing system will change from June, check your connection immediately
A very big and important news is coming for lakhs of electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. If you also have a smart electricity meter installed in your house, then your entire billing system is going to change from June 2026. Now in the state, even those people who were using prepaid smart meters and used to recharge them like mobile phones, will start getting electricity bills every month.
This means that now the hassle of recharging the meter again and again is gradually going to end completely. UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is continuously making consumers aware about this big change. But the most important thing to note here is that to get the electricity bill in June, it is very important to shift your smart meter to postpaid mode. If you have not received any message about this change, then instead of taking tension, you can check the status of your meter yourself sitting at home. For this you do not need to run to the electricity office, rather it can be detected by just pressing a button on the meter.
How to check the status of your smart meter in minutes without going to office
If no government message has come on your mobile regarding shifting to postpaid, then there is no need to panic. You can directly see the live status of the smart meter installed outside or inside your house on its own screen. For this you will have to press the control buttons given on the smart meter one by one.
As soon as you press the button, various information related to electricity will start changing on the screen. Meanwhile, the running mode of the meter will also flash on the screen for a few seconds. If “Postpaid” appears written on the meter screen, then understand that your meter is ready for the new billing system. But if ‘Prepaid’ is still visible there, it means that your meter is working on the old mode only. In such a situation, you can immediately register your complaint by calling the helpline number 1912 or through the official app of UPPCL.
What will change after shifting from prepaid to postpaid?
Till now, consumers with prepaid smart meters had to recharge their accounts before using electricity, and faced the fear of power cuts as soon as the recharge was over. But this fear will end after the postpaid system is implemented from June 2026. Now your electricity bill will be issued at the end of the month just like a normal electricity connection.
According to the new rules of UPPCL, from June 2026, electricity bills of consumers will be sent directly to their registered mobile numbers through SMS, WhatsApp and UPPCL app. Apart from this, consumers will also be able to see complete details of their bill and make payment by entering their customer ID on digital payment apps like Paytm or Google Pay.
If you want to get your electricity bill on time in June 2026, then make sure that your meter is changed to postpaid mode today. Along with this, definitely link your active mobile number with your electricity connection so that there is no problem in getting the bill through SMS and WhatsApp. Checking the status of the meter in time can save you from major problems and penalties later.
