New Delhi. The eyes of central employees and pensioners are fixed on the 8th Pay Commission. However, no final figures have been decided yet regarding increase in new salary, fitment factor and pension. At present, the Commission is taking forward its process by taking suggestions from employees, pensioners and various organizations.
Preparations are going on in the commission
The 8th Pay Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025. The commission has been given 18 months to prepare its report. Its chairperson is Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The Commission is taking suggestions from different employee organizations, pensioners, ministries and departments.
No decision yet on fitment factor
The most discussed issue among employees is about the fitment factor. On this basis, there is a possibility of deciding the new basic salary. The fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission was 2.57, but no figure has been officially decided yet for the 8th Pay Commission. Similarly, the current minimum basic salary is Rs 18,000. The decision as to how much will be done further will be clear only after the recommendations of the Commission and the approval of the Government.
DA and other allowances will also be affected
The impact of the new pay structure will not be limited to basic pay only. Changes in allowances like DA, HRA and transport allowance are also possible. However, it would not be right to directly add the existing DA to the new basic salary to estimate the new salary. The actual salary increase of an employee will depend on his pay level, post, posting and allowances received.
Pensioners will also get big benefits?
Pensioners are also included in the scope of the 8th Pay Commission. At present the minimum pension is Rs 9,000. No official announcement has been made yet on what this amount will be in the new system. At the same time, if the revised salary or pension is made effective from January 1, 2026, then whether arrears will be received or not and how it will be calculated will also become clear only after the final decision of the government.
