Bike Taxi New Policy: The Maharashtra government is preparing to bring food delivery and e-commerce companies like Swiggy, Zomato and Zepto under the ambit of the Maharashtra Bike-Taxi Rules, 2025. Now the rules (Bike Taxi New Policy) will also apply to them. The state transport department has prepared an important proposal, which has been sent to the Law and Justice department for review. The objectives behind this decision are to provide social security to delivery partners and bring pollution under control. What exactly is going to change?
What are the new rules?
According to the new rules, delivery companies will be required to deposit 2% of the fare of each ride or order into the Driver Welfare Fund. This money will be used for the pension, accident insurance and education of delivery partners and their children. According to the new rules, it is mandatory for companies to use electric vehicles for deliveries less than 15 kilometers.
Special attention to the safety of delivery partners
For security reasons, all delivery vehicles and drivers will be linked to a dedicated digital portal of the state transport commissioner for real-time tracking. Once covered under the bike-taxi rules, drivers may have to comply with requirements like Maharashtra domicile (residence certificate) and police verification, which is mandatory for Ola and Uber in the state.
Companies will face growing concerns
Currently, companies like Swiggy, Zomato and Zepto operate primarily under the central government’s Consumer Protection Act (2019) and Social Security Code (2020). If this amendment is approved, Maharashtra will become the first state in the country to bring food delivery and quick-commerce platforms under its bike-taxi regulatory framework. This may increase concerns for companies in the future, as it may increase the operating costs of companies like Swiggy and Zomato. This is because, unlike Ola-Uber, they do not charge a fixed fare from passengers, but pay delivery partners based on distance or order.
