New Delhi: The debate has intensified around the world regarding the power of Artificial Intelligence. Now Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has given such a statement regarding AI which has shocked everyone. Gates has said that AI has become so powerful that if it is misused, up to a billion people can die.
Can AI destroy humanity?
Bill Gates said this in NBC's show Meet the Press. Let us tell you, he was asked whether AI could be so dangerous that it could destroy the entire humanity. On this, Gates said that AI definitely has the ability to carry out such incidents which can cause massive devastation. However, he clarified that this is not a definite prediction, but a warning about a possible danger.

Gates' fear is not like a movie robot attacking humans. He says that the real danger comes from humans only. If extremely powerful AI tools fall into the wrong hands, they could be used to cause mass destruction. He specifically mentioned cyber attacks and bio-terrorism. According to him, with the help of AI, such cyber attacks can be carried out which can bring to a standstill essential services like hospitals, electricity and water.
This warning has come at a time when voices are being raised about the danger even from within the companies making AI. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodi has also expressed concern about the misuse of AI.
Need to set strict safety and rules
Bill Gates believes that just making rules for companies i.e. self-regulation is not enough. Governments and law making agencies will also have to set strict safety and monitoring rules for AI. He talked about systems that can detect whether any AI is being used for cyber attacks or making biological weapons.
Gates is not completely against AI. He says that AI can bring big changes in health, education and farming. But what is needed is that its speed does not become so fast that we are able to recover only after the loss is incurred.
