Bindiarani Devi won bronze in weightlifting, created history in Glasgow

India’s star weightlifter Bindiarani Devi performed brilliantly and won the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. With this victory, India also got its sixth medal of the tournament. Bindiarani finished third by lifting a total weight of 199 kg and once again brought glory to India on the international stage.

 

In the final match, Bindiyarani Devi lifted 87 kg in snatch and 112 kg in clean and jerk. However, Rafiatu Folashade of Nigeria won the gold medal with a total lift of 229 kg, while Ann Sophie Tashero of Canada won the silver medal with a total lift of 215 kg. Despite this, Bindiarani took India’s brilliant performance forward by winning the bronze medal.

Won second Commonwealth medal

This is the second Commonwealth Games medal in Bindiyarani Devi’s career. Earlier, she had won the silver medal in the women’s 55 kg category at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. Apart from this, he has proved his talent by winning gold medal in Commonwealth Championship 2019 and silver medal in 2021, 2025 Commonwealth Championship as well as 2023 Asian Championship. His consistent good performance has made him included in the list of reliable weightlifters of India.

Got inspiration from Mirabai Chanu

Bindiarani Devi, a resident of Manipur, has considered Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu as her idol since childhood. In the initial days, she was not very serious about her eating habits, but after Mirabai’s advice, she started paying special attention to her diet and fitness. After this, she achieved continuous success from junior level to senior international competitions and today is counted among the leading weightlifters of the country.

India’s medal tally becomes stronger

The excellent performance of Indian weightlifters continues in the Commonwealth Games 2026. On Monday itself, Dnyaneshwari Yadav made the country proud by winning the silver medal in the women’s 53 kg category. Earlier, Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu created a new history by winning the Commonwealth Games gold medal for the third consecutive time. Rishikant Singh and Raja Muthupandi also increased India’s medal tally by winning silver medals. Bindiyarani’s bronze medal is being considered as another important achievement in this brilliant campaign.
