NEW DELHI, May 4: The BJP looks all set to storm the Trinamool Congress bastion of West Bengal while retaining power with a massive mandate in Assam, while the actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is emerging as the history-maker unseating DMK in Tamil Nadu, while the Congress-led UDF has re-taken Kerala dislodging the CPI(M) in its last home.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the All India NR Congress with BJP s its alliance partner, is on course to retain power, with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy holding his seat and the counting trend shows alliance candidates are leading in a majority of seats.

Most shockingly, the DMK stalwart and the Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin himself was defeated in his home constituency of Kolathur in the hands of a little-known TVK rival VS Babu, while the West Bengal chief minister and the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee was fighting a see-saw battle in Bhabanipur in Kolkata city against her arch rival Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly and considered to be a chief ministerial candidate in the event. of the BJP’s victory.

The 2026 assembly election results are shaping up to be politically significant, with the BJP making major inroads and the final outcomes that is certain to see change of governments in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal may influence the broader direction of national politics in the coming years, particularly the future of the Narendra Modi government at the Center which is currently walking on the crutches of Telegu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United).

The BJP swung into lead both in Assam and West Bengal right from the start of the counting which began at 8 AM and by evening, though the final results were announced for a very few seats, the trend showed that the saffron party may cross 200 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly and more than 100 seats in the 122-member Assam Assembly. In Assam, the state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi was defeated in Jorhat by more than 8,000 votes.

In Tamil Nadu, the election has taken an unexpected turn with Vijay’s party TVK emerging as a strong contender for power though it may fall short of a few seats from the majority mark in the 234-member State Assembly. But his party has left the DMK far behind while the third party in the triangular contest, the AIADMK, which leads the NDA in the state, falling further down the line.

The day also brought good news for the Congress as the party-led United Democratic Front (UDF) clichéd a massive majority in the 140-member Kerala Assembly unseating the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).

These results are being seen as a major boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, strengthening its position ahead of future national elections, one after another decimating the regional powers with his BJP or the BJP-led alliance taking control of 22 states, while its principal rival the Congress has already become a pale shadow of what it was in the past and restricted to power in just four states, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and now Kerala.
