BJP fields third candidate in MP, Meenakshi Natarajan will not be able to go to Rajya Sabha?

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made the Rajya Sabha elections of Madhya Pradesh interesting. Now BJP has fielded its candidate for the third seat also. This means that it is going to be difficult for Congress, which till now seems confident of victory. Congress’s Meenakshi Natarajan now seems to be in trouble and now Congress has to struggle for each vote to win. BJP has fielded Mahesh Kevat from Madhya Pradesh as well as Dr. M Nagaraj from Karnataka as its candidates.

Along with this, BJP has also fielded its candidates for two seats of Karnataka Legislative Council. BJP has made Lingaraj Patil and Raghu Kautilya its candidates. However, there are elections for a total of 4 seats in Karnataka. Congress has fielded 3 candidates and BJP has fielded one candidate, so it is certain that all four candidates will be elected. The Karnataka seats are falling vacant due to the end of the tenure of N Koragappa, Eranna Kadadi, HD Deve Gowda and Mallikarjun Kharge. Of these, Mallikarjun Kharge is once again a Rajya Sabha candidate.

Elections are to be held on total seats of Rajya Sabha in Madhya Pradesh. These seats are falling vacant due to the end of the tenure of George Kurien, Digvajiya Singh and Sumer Singh Solanki. Earlier, BJP had fielded Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Aggarwal as its candidates and Congress had fielded Meenakshi Natarajan. As soon as the name of Meenakshi Natarajan was announced, the protests started and it seemed that now BJP will take advantage of this split and can also field its third candidate.

The total number of assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh is 230. At present two MLAs cannot vote, hence a total of 58 votes are required for one Rajya Sabha seat. BJP has a total of 164 MLAs. Congress has 64 MLAs and one MLA from another party. According to this number, BJP can get two seats and Congress can get one. However, there is talk of cross voting from the Congress side.

If BJP’s third candidate wants to win, he needs the support of at least 10 Congress MLAs. BJP has probably fielded its third candidate only after getting such assurance. Now it will be interesting to see
