The picture of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2027 is not completely clear yet, but political parties have started putting their respective issues before the public. It is clear from the statements of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP President Nitin Naveen in Meerut that BJP wants to fight this election on the basis of nearly ten years of work of the government, law and order, development, religious-cultural issues and the strength of the organization. On the other hand, Samajwadi Party under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav is trying to make women, girl students, youth, employment and social justice the center of election debate. In such a situation, the 2027 elections will not only be a contest between BJP vs SP, but the role of Congress and BSP can also affect the outcome of the seats.
The biggest argument before the BJP is that after 2017, the priorities of the government in Uttar Pradesh have been linked to development and law and order. BJP leaders are constantly highlighting issues like expressways, investment, industry, infrastructure and women's safety. In the party's election preparations, emphasis is also on taking government schemes to every home and activating the organization at the booth level.
Employment is going to be an equally important issue for BJP. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced to give one lakh appointment letters in the next six months. Appointment letters have been distributed in various departments in September also. There is a system of providing government and private sector jobs together on the government employment portal. Along with this, the process of teacher recruitment is also progressing.
This is the area where the opposition wants to corner the BJP. Samajwadi Party argues that government appointments alone are not enough and a comprehensive structure of education, employment and economic assistance is necessary for the youth. Akhilesh Yadav's new announcements include the promise of restarting Kanya Vidyadhan Yojana and giving fifty thousand rupees to 12th pass girl students. Apart from this, announcements like annual assistance of forty thousand rupees for women and laptops for girl students have also been made.
The second basis of SP's strategy is social equation. The party is trying to include PDA i.e. backward, Dalit and minority classes with itself. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, SP won 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while BJP won 33 seats. This result cannot be considered a direct indication of the assembly elections, but it definitely makes it clear that the social and political equation of the state has changed in comparison to the previous elections.
BJP is trying to answer this challenge through the functioning of its organization and government. The party's strategy includes reaching out to the beneficiaries of development schemes, increasing contact with women, youth, farmers, small businessmen and various social sections. Chief Minister Yogi's frequent district-wise visits are also a part of this campaign. The situation of Congress is different. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress had won six seats in Uttar Pradesh and had an alliance with SP.
How the coordination of seats between Congress and SP is formed in 2027 will be important for the electoral capability of the opposition. The biggest challenge before the Congress is how much it can strengthen its organization and independent political base in the state. If it enters the field with effective seat share and strong candidates, then the mathematics of competition on many seats can change. The role of BSP is also no less important. Mayawati has announced to contest the 2027 assembly elections alone. BSP's traditional Dalit base has long been important in Uttar Pradesh politics. Therefore, how many votes does BSP retain and in which areas its influence remains, can become an important electoral mathematics for both BJP and SP.
The challenge before BSP is to reactivate its old organization and social base. The party has started work towards presenting the law and order and administrative model of the 2007 to 2012 rule among the public. On the other hand, various parties are trying to bring the social base of BSP in their favor. This means that even if BSP contests the elections alone, its votes may impact the seats of other parties.
Now the question is whose government will be formed in Uttar Pradesh in 2027. It is not possible to give a definite answer to this before voting. While the BJP had won a majority in 2022, the results from the state showed a different picture in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Therefore, it would not be correct to consider the Lok Sabha figures as the final result of the Assembly. The decision of 2027 will depend on constituency-wise candidates, local issues, caste equations, voting behavior of women and youth, alliances and public perception towards the functioning of the government.
BJP has issues of functioning of the government, identity of Chief Minister Yogi, organization and development and law and order. SP has the issue of change of power, political identity of Akhilesh Yadav, PDA social equation and new announcements for women and youth. Congress faces the challenge of increasing its organization and influence, while BSP is trying to strengthen its traditional social base.
Therefore, the real contest of 2027 will be more about which party is able to connect its point of view with the everyday experience of the voter rather than the announcements. BJP will have to prove its claims of development and law and order on the ground, SP will have to show what will be the financial and administrative path for its announcements, Congress will have to make its clear political base and BSP will have to reactivate its organization and social influence. The final decision will be taken by the people of Uttar Pradesh and it is too early to draw a definite conclusion about the formation of the government by any one party.
