BMW Motorrad has increased prices of the F 450 GS in India, making the recently introduced adventure motorcycle more expensive across its range.
The F 450 GS was launched as BMW’s new entry point into its GS adventure family and is manufactured in India by TVS Motor Company. It sits below the larger F 800 GS and F 900 GS models while offering a twin-cylinder engine and a more serious adventure-touring package than the older G 310 GS it effectively succeeds.
The price revision comes relatively soon after the motorcycle’s India launch, although the mechanical package and equipment remain unchanged.
BMW offers the F 450 GS in three variants: Standard, Exclusive and Trophy.
The range structure allows the company to cover customers looking for a relatively straightforward entry into the GS family as well as those wanting additional equipment and a more distinctive adventure-bike appearance.
The Trophy sits at the top of the range and carries the familiar GS Trophy-inspired styling treatment.
Despite the revised prices, BMW has not announced corresponding mechanical changes. The F 450 GS therefore continues with the same engine, chassis and electronics package introduced at launch.
At the centre of the F 450 GS is a 420cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine. It produces 47 bhp and 43 Nm and is paired with a six-speed gearbox.
The twin-cylinder configuration is an important part of the motorcycle’s positioning. BMW’s previous small-capacity GS, the G 310 GS, used a single-cylinder engine. The F 450 GS moves the entry-level GS offering closer in character to BMW’s larger adventure motorcycles.
The motorcycle uses a tubular steel frame and a 43mm upside-down front fork, along with a rear monoshock. Suspension travel is designed to support a mix of road use and light off-road riding.
It runs on a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel combination, a layout that favours road and touring use while retaining some ability on broken surfaces and trails.
BMW has also equipped the motorcycle with disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS.
The F 450 GS gets a 6.5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity and navigation functions. Depending on the variant and equipment package, BMW also offers multiple riding modes and electronic rider aids.
The motorcycle’s upright riding position, wind protection and luggage options also make it suitable for touring.
At the same time, its smaller engine and lower weight make it more accessible than BMW’s middleweight and large-capacity GS models, particularly for riders who use the motorcycle regularly in cities.
The F 450 GS enters a rapidly expanding adventure-motorcycle segment in India.
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has established a strong presence at a lower price point, while motorcycles such as the KTM 390 Adventure target riders looking for more performance and electronics from a single-cylinder platform.
The BMW takes a different route with its parallel-twin engine and premium positioning. Its India manufacturing arrangement with TVS is also important because it allows BMW to produce the motorcycle locally rather than relying on a fully imported model.
The price increase does make the gap to some of its single-cylinder rivals wider. However, BMW is relying on the twin-cylinder engine, GS branding, equipment and premium dealership experience to justify that difference.
For riders who were already considering the F 450 GS, the latest revision does not alter what the motorcycle offers. It simply raises the amount required to enter BMW’s new small-capacity GS range.
