Bommai says new Karnataka CM swearing-in unlikely to aid common people
BJP MP and former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai criticized the state Congress government on Saturday, stating that the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister, scheduled for Monday, is unlikely to provide relief or meaningful change for the state’s residents.
Addressing reporters about the political developments, Bommai said, “The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister scheduled for Monday is not expected to bring any relief or significant change for the common people of the state.”
He also highlighted Karnataka’s heavy debt burden and alleged poor governance and lack of development, which he said have generated despair among the public, especially within the OBC community. Bommai claimed, “The state is grappling with the burden of heavy debt. There is an atmosphere of despair among people due to the lack of good governance and development. People, especially the OBC community, are continuously experiencing frustration, the impact of which will be seen in future elections.”
These comments were made amid a leadership change and organizational reshuffle in the Karnataka Congress following Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation on May 28.
The Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot, accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation, leading to the dissolution of the Council of Ministers. However, Siddaramaiah has been asked to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until new arrangements are completed.
In the context of this political transition, Karnataka Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that a crucial Congress Legislature Party meeting would take place in Bengaluru at 4 pm on Saturday, with party observers present. He indicated that these observers would consult the Congress high command before final decisions on leadership and organizational issues are made.
Regarding the leadership transition and his potential elevation to Chief Minister, Shivakumar said no timeline has been given. “I still do not know when they will elect the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Then we will discuss,” he stated.
Shivakumar also met Congress leaders Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Friday.
The leadership changes coincide with increased political activity in Karnataka, as the Congress works to finalize key appointments including Rajya Sabha nominations and MLC positions, while managing internal party dynamics following Siddaramaiah’s resignation.
