BRICS Summit 2026: The 18th BRICS Summit meeting hosted by India has started at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Leaders of BRICS member countries and partner countries are participating in the two-day summit. Apart from this, representatives of the countries invited for outreach are also attending the conference.

This year’s theme of India’s BRICS Chairship is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. This reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's people-centric approach based on the spirit of “Humanity First”. In the meeting, ways to strengthen cooperation on shared priorities among BRICS countries and global and regional issues will be discussed.
Addressing the summit, PM Modi said that AI, cyber space, outer space, biotechnology and critical technologies are setting the global rules along with future opportunities. In such a situation, equal participation of the Global South is necessary. He said that through BRICS, young diplomats and policy makers of the Global South can be provided with negotiation skills, practical training and legal expertise.

Addressing the BRICS leaders, PM Modi said that we have to convert our work into concrete results on the global stage. We have to work on a new and ambitious agenda for the next 20 years. We have to start this from the way we work. The BRICS presidency changes every year, but this should not stop the institutional momentum.
PM Modi said that friends, while strengthening BRICS, we will also have to decide the direction of global reform. The current structure of global governance looks like a pyramid. Power and decision-making power are concentrated in its upper part, while in the lower part are the countries which are affected by these decisions but have a limited role in shaping them.
PM Modi said that the development of humanity should be at the center of every effort. For this purpose, he proposed that the BRICS countries should together prepare 10 proposals for global governance reform and efforts should be made to convert them into a BRICS reform roadmap by the next summit. PM Modi said that in this roadmap, special attention will have to be paid to three aspects: Representation, Responsiveness and Rule Making. PM Modi said that reforms in the United Nations Security Council cannot be postponed any longer. Text-based negotiations on this issue need to be linked to clear deadlines and clear outcomes.

PM Modi said that he proposes BRICS Community Continuity and Implementation Mechanism. Under this, all the initiatives and results can be followed up through Troika. He said that a secure digital repository can be created, in which the nodal point, time limit and status of its implementation can be recorded with every decision.
PM Modi said that voting power, leadership role and policy priorities in financial institutions should be in accordance with today's economic reality, countries which drive global economic growth should also get an appropriate role in giving direction to global economic governance. On responsiveness, he said that people's trust in global institutions will be built only when they are able to solve problems effectively. Attention has to be paid to the speed, scale and last mile impact of collective response. PM Modi also proposed creating an emergency support network for seafarers, linking maritime authorities and missions to provide distress alerts, medical assistance, information to families and help in evacuation.
