Bulldozer action started in Delhi’s Yamuna market, MCD action on illegal constructions; heavy forces deployed
MCD started bulldozer action against illegal constructions in Yamuna Bazar area of Delhi on Thursday morning. In view of the action, security arrangements have been increased in the area, so that any untoward situation can be dealt with. According to officials, earlier the DDA had issued a new notice to the people living in Yamuna Bazaar of Kashmiri Gate area. In the notice, people living between ghat numbers 2 to 32 were asked to vacate the place voluntarily. It was also made clear in the notice that if people do not vacate the place themselves, demolition action will be taken by the administration. After this, the process of removing encroachment in the area was started from Thursday.
There are about 310 houses in the area, in which about 1100 people live. Due to fear of action, many families have already vacated their homes and moved to other places. Local residents allege that even before the administration took action, water facilities in the area were affected and water connections were disconnected. People say that they were asked to vacate their homes by Wednesday night. In the earlier notice issued by the administration, people living between ghat numbers 2 to 32 of Yamuna Bazaar were asked to vacate the place. The notice warned that demolition action would be taken if people did not vacate the place voluntarily.
Amidst the fear of action by the administration, some people have started removing their belongings and moving to other places, while many families are still living in their homes. Local resident Ganesh said that the people being removed have been asked to stay in the temporary shelter of DUSIB. Raising questions, he said that it is not appropriate to vacate the houses and send people to night shelters and the problems of the affected families should also be kept in mind. Meanwhile, Sunil Sharma, treasurer of Yamuna Ghat Panda Association, claimed that the organization has approached the court in this matter. He says that till now no order has come from the court regarding demolition, yet action is being taken to remove the people.
When were the notices sent?
• May 13: Notice issued to evacuate Yamuna market area under the Disaster Management Act.
• May 15: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) issued notice to vacate Yamuna market citing O-zone area falling under Yamuna floodplain.
• After High Court order of June 2: DDA gave notice to affected people to vacate their houses by June 23. It was said in the notice that after this the action would be started from June 24.
• Thursday morning: The administration started a demolition drive against illegal constructions in Yamuna Bazar area.
Government gave option
In the notice issued by DDA, the affected people were told that they can temporarily stay in different night shelters. Under this, an option has been given to stay in the shelter located in Raja Garden and A Block JJ Rehabilitation Colony (JJR Colony) of Sultanpuri. Apart from this, option of staying facility has also been given in night shelters and night shelters located in Saraswati Park of Munirka and Geeta Colony.
Delhi High Court’s instructions
Delhi High Court has given instructions to ban residential and commercial activities in the floodplain of Yamuna. The court has described the illegal construction in the flood area as a threat to the environment and the natural flow of the river. According to government data, about 91 colonies and villages are located in the Yamuna flood area. Following the instructions of the High Court, the people living in these areas are facing the crisis of displacement. Delhi Government has told the High Court that about 6 lakh people are living in these colonies and villages. The government has talked about rehabilitation of the affected people, so that alternative arrangements can be made available to the families affected by the action.
