Election Commission released the schedule of by-elections, voting will be held on these seats from Tamil Nadu to Assam.
The Election Commission has announced the dates of by-elections for the assembly seats of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal along with one Lok Sabha seat of Assam. Voting on these seats will take place on October 6, 2026, while votes will be counted on October 9 and the results will be released. The entire election process will be completed before 11 October 2026.
According to the Election Commission, the formal Gazette Notification of the election will be released on 9 September 2026. The last date for filing nominations has been fixed as September 16. The election code of conduct has come into effect in the respective districts.
Elections on these seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
By-elections will be held on Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. Both these seats fell vacant after the resignation of Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama. The final voter list of both the seats was released on 23 February.
At the same time, by-election will also be held on Thattanchavady assembly seat of Puducherry. This seat has become vacant after the resignation of N. Rangasamy. The voter list here was published on 14 February.
Voting in West Bengal and Assam also
By-elections will be held on Rejinagar and Nandigram assembly seats of West Bengal. Rejinagar seat fell vacant after the resignation of Humayun Kabir and Nandigram seat Suvendu Adhikari. The final voter list of these seats was released on 28 February.
By-election will also be held on Nagaon Lok Sabha seat of Assam. This seat was vacant after the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi. The last voter list here was released on 10 February.
Shillong and Basirhat elections not yet
The Election Commission has not yet announced the dates for Shillong and Basirhat Lok Sabha seats. The Shillong seat fell vacant after the demise of VPP MP Ricky Andrew J. Lyngdoh. Whereas, Basirhat seat is vacant since September 2024 after the death of TMC MP Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam.
Voting will be done through EVM and VVPAT
Election Commission has said that EVM and VVPAT will be used at all polling stations. EPIC Card will remain the main identity document. Apart from this, voters will also be able to use Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Passport and other documents specified by the Commission. The voter list will be updated till the last date of nomination.
