Bypoll trends: Vijay’s TVK leads in two Tamil Nadu seats, AINRC in Puducherry

Early trends on Friday (October 9) showed the ruling TVK ahead in Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypolls, while Chief Minister N Rangasamy’s AINRC led in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady seat. Counting for the October 6 bypolls began at 8 am.

TVK leads in two Tamil Nadu seats

In Tamil Nadu, TVK had secured the highest number of votes in the early rounds, followed by the DMK and AIADMK. The trends will become clearer as counting progresses.

The Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC) seats fell vacant after AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned. Both had backed Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government during a floor test before leaving the AIADMK and joining the ruling TVK.

AIADMK has fielded S Kanitha Sampath in Madurantakam and K Bhanumathi in Dharapuram. The DMK candidates are I Paranthamen and S Suganya, respectively.

Sengottiyan expresses confidence in TVK victory

Ahead of counting, Tamil Nadu Minister KA Sengottiyan expressed confidence that TVK would win the two seats by a wide margin.

“The results of the Dharapuram and Maduranthakam by-elections will stand as a testament and proof to the people of the good governance being delivered by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on behalf of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. It is certain that we will win by a massive margin of votes unprecedented in the history of Tamil Nadu politics. The margin will be such that it will amaze the people. This by-election will be a historic event that recognises the achievements of the Chief Minister,” he said. (ANI)

AINRC-led NDA leads in Thattanchavady

In Puducherry, early trends favoured the AINRC-led NDA government in Thattanchavady. Rangasamy had won from Thattanchavady and Mangalam in the Assembly election but retained Mangalam, leaving the former seat vacant.

The results are being watched by the ruling parties and the Opposition after the recent Assembly elections. The early leads could change as more votes are counted.

BJP contests Nandigram, AJUP fields Kabir's son

In West Bengal, counting is underway in Nandigram and Rejinagar. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vacated Nandigram after retaining Bhabanipur, where he defeated former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

The BJP has fielded Hasirani Rath in Nandigram. Her son, Chandranath Rath, a former aide of Adhikari, was shot dead on May 6, two days after the BJP won the Assembly election and came to power in the state for the first time.

Rejinagar fell vacant after Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir retained Nowda, having won both seats in the 2026 Assembly election. AJUP has fielded his son, Golam Nabi Azad.

BJP, Congress and AIUDF contest Nagaon seat

In Assam, votes are being counted for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. The constituency fell vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi left Congress, joined the BJP and won the Dispur Assembly seat in the 2026 state election.

The BJP has fielded former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma. Congress has nominated former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora, while AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is also in the contest.
