Can your daily soft drink be affecting your hair?
Most people associate soft drinks with weight gain, diabetes and other health concerns. But could your daily soda also be affecting your hair?
The question has gained attention after hair transplant surgeon Dr Abhishek Pilani discussed the issue on a recent podcast, pointing to research that suggests a possible connection between sugary beverages and hair loss.
What the study found
A 2023 study published in the journal Nutrients examined more than 1,000 young men in China and found that those who consumed higher amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages were more likely to report male-pattern hair loss.
However, researchers stressed that the study found an association, not proof that soft drinks directly cause hair loss.
Still, experts say the findings are worth paying attention to because excessive sugar consumption can contribute to health issues that may indirectly affect hair growth.
How sugar may affect hair health
Healthy hair depends on proper nutrition, blood circulation and overall well-being. Frequent consumption of sugary drinks can lead to repeated spikes in blood sugar levels, which over time may contribute to inflammation and metabolic problems.
Doctors say these conditions can affect the body’s ability to support healthy hair follicles, potentially increasing the risk of thinning hair.
However, hair loss is rarely caused by a single factor. Genetics, hormones, stress, sleep quality, nutrition and lifestyle habits all play important roles.
It’s about overall lifestyle
Experts caution against blaming soft drinks alone. People who consume large amounts of sugary beverages may also have poor dietary habits, lack exercise or suffer from nutrient deficiencies, all of which can impact hair health.
Hair requires essential nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D and B vitamins to grow properly. When these nutrients are lacking, hair may become weaker and more prone to shedding.
Should you stop drinking soft drinks?
There is currently no evidence that an occasional soft drink causes hair loss. The concern lies with long-term excessive consumption and its impact on overall health.
Doctors advise focusing on a balanced diet, adequate sleep, stress management and proper nutrition rather than searching for a single cause of hair fall.
The message is simple: healthy hair often starts with a healthy body.
