The past year has been a challenging one for Canva as a result of technology. This is why the company has taken steps towards changing its operations and organizational structure. The decision has sparked a debate that once again raises a big question mark about job stability in the tech industry.
Changes in the way the company works
Canva is now planning to change its organizational structure to make it even easier. As a result, its product, growth and platform divisions will make these changes under a single product organization. The aim behind this is to improve coordination between different teams and speed up the decision-making process. Additionally, the company will focus on converting more limited specialty positions into broader roles and reducing management levels. This will give employees more responsibility from the start of the project to its completion.
As many as 1271 employees are affected by the decision
According to information released by the company, the change will affect a total of 1,271 employees. That's roughly 22% of Canva's global workforce. But, all these employees will not lose their jobs. Some will have their current responsibilities modified, while others may be asked to relocate to designated company offices. Some employees will have to leave the organization.
Melanie Perkins, Canva's co-founder and CEO, lamented the decision in a message to employees. He admitted that this is the most difficult period in the company's 13-year history. According to him, the organization had considered several options before this change, but small changes were not enough in the current situation.
Employees will get financial support
The company has also announced a support package for retrenched employees. This includes paying at least six months of salary. In addition, career and health assistance will also be provided. Canva did not directly mention artificial intelligence as a reason for the layoffs in its official statement, but the new technology is rapidly changing the design and software industries. Therefore, the company is looking to change its workflow and employee roles to meet future needs.
