Capital Shillong Waterfall Accident: Body of UP girl recovered

The body of a 15-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh, who fell into the Wei Sawdong waterfall in Meghalaya’s Sohra, has been recovered. The girl had slipped while taking photographs. Local people and the rescue team carried out a joint operation and took out the body.

Shillong: A 15-year-old girl, who had come to visit Wei Sawdong waterfall in Meghalaya’s famous tourist area Sohra, died. The girl, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, slipped and fell into a deep waterfall while taking photographs. His body was recovered on Thursday morning after a search operation that lasted for several hours.

According to local administration and rescue agencies, this accident happened on Wednesday. After the incident, there was chaos in the area and rescue operation was started immediately. However, due to darkness the search operation had to be stopped late in the evening.

This incident is once again raising serious questions regarding security arrangements and vigilance at tourist places having hills and waterfalls.

Teenager slipped while taking photo

According to officials, the family from Uttar Pradesh had come to see Wei Sawdong Waterfall. This waterfall is considered extremely popular among tourists for its natural beauty and three-tiered water stream.

It is being told that the girl was getting photographed near the waterfall. During this time, she lost her balance and fell straight down. People present nearby immediately called for help, but due to the strong current and depth he could not be saved.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened within a few seconds and no one got a chance to recover.

Rescue operation continued till late evening

As soon as information about the incident was received, the local administration, fire department and police team reached the spot. Rescue teams searched for the teenager till Wednesday evening, but had to call off the operation due to difficult geographical conditions and sunset.

Officials said that the area around the waterfall is extremely slippery and dangerous. There were many difficulties in the rescue operation due to strong currents, rocks and deep ditches.

The area was monitored overnight and the search operation was resumed on Thursday morning.

Dead body found between rocks

At around 7.30 am on Thursday, local people saw the body stuck between the rocks near the waterfall. After this the administration was immediately informed.

A joint team of fire and emergency services and Sohra police took out the body at around 10 pm.

According to officials, the body has been sent for post-mortem and further legal process is being completed.

Why is Wei Sawdong Waterfall famous?

Wei Sawdong Waterfall is counted among the most beautiful tourist places in Meghalaya. This waterfall attracts tourists from all over the world for its clear blue water stream and natural rock formations.

Seohara, formerly known as Cherrapunji, is one of the rainiest areas in India. A large number of domestic and foreign tourists reach here every year.

However, due to continuous rain and slippage, this area sometimes becomes the center of accidents.

The administration is now considering further strengthening the security arrangements and surveillance at Wei Sawdong Falls and surrounding areas.
