For Netflix subscribers, the clock is now ticking. According to What’s on NetflixSavages is among the titles leaving the service in October, with the movie scheduled to disappear starting Oct. 1.
Savages follow Ben and Chon who build a lucrative marijuana operation in California and share a relationship with O, played by Lively. Their setup falls apart when Elena, Hayek’s ruthless cartel boss, demands a piece of their business and takes O. The two men then turn their attention toward getting her back, with help from a questionable DEA agent portrayed by Travolta.
Stone directed the movie and also co-wrote the screenplay with Shane Salerno and novelist Don Winslow. Moritz Borman and Eric Kopeloff produced the film. Relativity Media handled production, while Universal Pictures distributed it.
The movie’s reception landed somewhere in the middle rather than turning into a critical knockout. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists a 50% Tomatometer score from 193 reviews and a 54% audience score from more than 100,000 ratings. IMDb gives it 6.4/10 from roughly 139,000 votes. Financially, Savages cost about $45 million to make and collected approximately $82.97 million worldwide, including $47.38 million domestically.
Savages leans into the kind of mayhem Oliver Stone knows well. Cartel warfare, graphic violence and simmering tension keep the movie moving, paired with its glossy California setting. The finale remains a sticking point for fans, with many finding its payoff frustrating. Still, anyone craving a fast, nasty crime thriller with plenty of firepower will find plenty to enjoy here.
