CDSCO Kidney Warning 2026: If you have a headache, immediately take painkiller, if you have fever, keep antibiotic pills at home… If you also take medicines without consulting the doctor, then stop. In fact, the medicine which we consider to provide immediate relief from minor problems, its repeated or wrong use can also cause harm. Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has issued a warning on 22 September 2026 regarding excessive use (indiscriminate use) of painkillers and antibiotics. Why is it risky to take painkiller in every pain?
In case of headache, body ache or any other pain, people often take painkillers voluntarily. But, CDSCO has said that long-term use of NSAIDs can increase the risk of kidney-related problems. Especially people who already have kidney problems, lack of water in the body or have some other health risks, they need special caution in using these medicines.
However, this does not mean that the painkiller prescribed by the doctor will cause harm in every situation. The concern is mainly about self-medication unnecessarily, frequently or for a long period of time.
It is not right to take antibiotics during fever
Many people think that by taking antibiotics as soon as fever or infection appears, the disease will be cured quickly. But not every infection requires antibiotics. Antibiotics do not work especially in common viral infections.
Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can cause another big problem – antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This means that, over time, some bacteria may become resistant to drugs and the same antibiotic may prove to be less effective when needed. Therefore, if the doctor has prescribed an antibiotic, it should be taken as per his advice. Apart from this, it is also not advisable to start taking the remaining antibiotics on your own during the next illness or share the medicine with another person.
Special advice was also given to doctors
CDSCO has told doctors that NSAIDs and antibiotics should be used only when medically necessary. In the case of NSAIDs, emphasis has been placed on using the lowest effective dose and appropriately short duration. It is advised to keep in mind factors like the patient’s age, pre-existing diseases, other medications and kidney-related risks.
Instructions to chemists and hospitals also
CDSCO has also asked Pharmacists, Retailers and Distributors to follow the rules related to prescription medicines. Especially for the sale of Schedule H and H1 medicines, it is necessary to follow the conditions prescribed under Drugs Rules, 1945.
