Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Padma Shri, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, has welcomed and thanked Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and the Government of India for approving the Chenab–Beas Link Tunnel and allied projects aimed at maximizing the utilization of India’s rightful share of Indus basin waters.
Dr. Sahney said that the proposed 8.7-kilometre tunnel will facilitate the diversion of surplus Chenab waters into the Beas basin, a long-awaited step that can significantly benefit Punjab and this landmark decision reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening national water security while addressing the growing water challenges faced by Punjab.
Emphasizing Punjab’s urgent water crisis, Dr. Sahney noted that he has consistently raised concern on the diversion of river waters to the other states. He pointed out that Punjab is extracting groundwater at an alarming rate of nearly 164% of its annually replenishable groundwater resources, with 19 of its 23 districts falling in the over-exploited category.
Dr. Sahney stated that the diversion of surplus waters from the Chenab, Jhelum and Indus systems offers a transformative opportunity for groundwater recharge, sustainable agriculture and long-term water security, this landmark initiative will help secure the future of Punjab’s farmers, arrest the alarming decline in water tables and protect the state from the looming threat of desertification, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
