There is ice not on the surface of the moon but under the ground, Chandrayaan-2 discovered the treasure of water! Even scientists were surprised
Moon Ice Discovery: Scientists associated with India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission have discovered strong signs of ice beneath the surface in the southern polar region of the Moon. This discovery is considered very important for future human missions to the Moon. This study is part of the ‘NPJ Space Exploration’ Has been published in the journal.
Scientists from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad analyzed radar data received from Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. Chandrayaan-2 has been orbiting the Moon since 2019. According to scientists, the ice is not hidden on the surface of the moon but under the ground.
Temperature around minus 248 degrees
This ice may exist in craters where sunlight never reaches. Some smaller craters exist within larger craters and both are always dark. These are called ‘double shadowed’ is called area. The temperature here remains around minus 248 degrees Celsius, due to which the ice can remain safe for billions of years.
signs of snow detected by radar
The dual frequency synthetic aperture radar installed in Chandrayaan-2 sends microwave signals to the lunar surface and studies their return patterns. Snow reflects these signals differently than rock and dust. According to ISRO, scientists have found radar signals in four such craters in the South Pole region which indicate the presence of ice beneath the ground. A total of nine craters were studied.
One of these small craters is considered to be the most special. It is approximately 1.1 kilometers wide and lies within the larger Faustini crater. Scientists have found the strongest signals here. The external structure of this crater also looks different, which indicates that the ice present under the ground would have spread outwards during the impact of a meteorite.
Why discovery is important for future missions
Scientists believe that the presence of water on the Moon will be very important for future human missions. Moving water from the earth is a very expensive and difficult task. If ice is found on the Moon, it can be melted to prepare potable water.
Also read- Electricity will be generated from air, new discovery by scientists can eliminate battery tension, power will continue to be available for 30 days.
Apart from this, rocket fuel can also be made by separating hydrogen and oxygen from water. For this reason, the South Pole of the Moon has become the most important area for the world’s big space agencies. ISRO has said that this discovery can prove to be very important for future lunar missions and plans for the use of resources on the Moon.
