Chappell Roan details heartbreak and mixed signals behind her hit song ‘Casual’

Chappell Roan’s hit song Casual was inspired by one of the singer’s personal romantic experiences.

During Rosalía’s final U.S. stop of the LUX Tour on Monday, June 6, the 28-year-old singer-songwriter took part in the confessional segment, where she was invited to share anything on her mind.

In a fan-shared TikTok clip, Roan reflected on Lola Young’s confession and began, “I saw Lola Young’s confession, and it reminded me of something a little similar.”

“I was writing with someone, and we kind of started to flirt with each other,” she continued, explaining that she and the unnamed collaborator spoke online for three months throughout the pandemic.

The Good Luck, Babe! hitmaker then admitted that she had “really liked” the person and met up with them for a date in Los Angeles, though things did not go as planned.

“We kissed and I was floating. I was just so like, ‘Wow,’ and then I didn’t hear from them in four days. I texted them and I said, ‘What’s going on?’ We had our date and I had so much fun and they said, ‘I met someone,’” she added.

Following a seemingly perfect first date and months of flirting, the person suddenly stopped responding. Roan later learned that the person had described their connection as “just casual” to a mutual friend, which ultimately inspired her to write her 2023 hit song Casual.

“They were writing with another artist, which is normal… But they said to this artist I was friends with that they knew they should be sad and care about me, but they don’t, and that they don’t know why I’m so upset because it was just casual,” she noted. “That turned into a song… But I’ve never said this story because they write with artists that you know.”

When did Chappell Roan release Casual?

Chappell Roan first released Casual as a single in October 2022, with the song later appearing on her acclaimed debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
