Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing surgery for a fractured jaw, manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Friday, ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Argentina international sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton last Saturday after colliding with defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Martinez received treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital, where examinations revealed a jaw fracture that required surgery.
Alonso said the goalkeeper was recovering well but could not provide a definite timeline for his return.
“He’s been better; he had the surgery. We still need to wait. A few weeks. Hopefully less than more,” Alonso told reporters.

With Martinez unavailable, Mike Penders is expected to start against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Belgian goalkeeper replaced Martinez during the second half against Everton and helped Chelsea preserve its clean sheet.
Alonso expressed confidence in Penders, pointing to his performances in domestic cup competitions and his brief appearance against Everton.
“He is ready,” Alonso said. “He has been training well and played a couple of cup games where he showed he has a good level.”
The Chelsea manager also provided updates on Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria, who missed the Everton fixture due to illness and injury, respectively.
While Gusto has recovered and is available for selection, Chavarria remains sidelined despite making progress in training.
