Big decision on Ajit Agarkar's chair! BCCI gave authority to the officials, now the future of the Chief Selector will be decided

In the 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today (18 September), an important decision has been taken regarding the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The member units of the Board have authorized BCCI officials to take decisions on matters related to selection committees. Now the board officials will decide whether to retain Agarkar on the post or appoint a new chairman in his place.

Eye on Agarkar's tenure

Ajit Agarkar is currently the chairman of the Indian Men's Senior Selection Committee. His current tenure is going to end in early October 2026. For this reason, the discussion regarding his future had intensified before the AGM. However, no final announcement was made in the meeting regarding extension of Agarkar's tenure or appointment of a new Chief Selector. According to the report of Cricbuzz, discussions are going on regarding the possibility of Agarkar continuing in the post. Now the final decision will be taken by BCCI officials. Agarkar was appointed chairman of the men's senior selection committee in July 2023.

Questions were raised after Rohit Sharma controversy

Questions about Agarkar's tenure were also raised when rumors of Rohit Sharma's retirement surfaced during the ODI series in England. Reports claimed that Agarkar had informed Rohit about his last ODI match and said that he would not be included in the future team plans. However, later BCCI rejected these reports. Board Secretary Devjit Saikia had called it a rumor and said that Rohit Sharma is not going anywhere. After this the situation regarding Rohit's future became clear.

Five posts are vacant in Junior Selection Committee also

BCCI is not just facing the issue of Senior Selection Committee. Five posts of Junior Selection Committee are also to be filled. The board had invited applications for these posts on August 24, but the interview process has not been completed yet. It is expected that a new junior selection committee can be announced next month.

Parthiv Patel's name also in discussion

If BCCI does not extend Agarkar's tenure, then the prescribed procedure will have to be followed for the appointment of the new Chief Selector. Under this, the process of issuing advertisement for the post and interviewing the candidates will have to be completed. Meanwhile, the name of former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel is in discussion among the possible candidates. Parthiv is currently the assistant coach of Gujarat Titans and is also associated with commentary. It has been more than five years since he retired from active cricket. However, the final decision on who will replace Agarkar will be taken by BCCI only.

Decision also taken in IPL Governing Council

Let us tell you that in the AGM, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal and Khairul Jamal Majumdar were re-elected unopposed to the IPL Governing Council. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla said that all the decisions in the AGM were taken with mutual consent.
