Chinese tanker tests US blockade… makes U-turn after passing through Hormuz
Tehran. The US recently imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports. This means that no ship can go to or come from Iranian ports. This blockade came into effect on April 13. Its purpose is to stop Iran’s oil trade. Especially those ships are being stopped which come and go to Iranian ports or coastal areas. Now a tanker belonging to a Chinese company has put this blockade to the test, which is being widely discussed all over the world.
According to reports, the Chinese tanker is named Rich Starry. It belongs to the Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Company. The US banned it in 2023 for helping Iran evade sanctions. The tanker was carrying approximately 250,000 barrels of methanol (a type of chemical). As soon as the blockade began, it passed through the Strait of Hormuz and exited the Gulf.
How the Chinese tanker managed to pass through the Strait:
The tanker initially turned back after reaching Hormuz. A few hours later, it proceeded again and successfully passed through. After passing through, it made a U-turn. Its destination was a port in Oman, but it was later changed. During this time, it also disclosed its Chinese ownership. Several other ships have also crossed the Strait at the same time.
The ceasefire
incident has further escalated tensions in the region. China has strongly condemned the US blockade, calling it dangerous. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun called it irresponsible and warned that it could escalate regional tensions. Shipping companies are now on alert as oil prices are rising. This incident shows how effective the blockade is and what could happen next.
