Known for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, Christopher Nolan shared another unexpected behind-the-scenes rule.

The 55-year-old filmmaker has one surprising rule for his cast: no Ugg boots.

In chat with Gayle King on CBS Mornings on July 20, The Odyssey director opened up about why he doesn’t want Uggs on his set.

“I want to stay in the moment. I want the actors to stay in the moment,” he stated. “For me, the Ugg boots are a signifier of modernity, absurd though that is.”

Christopher said the policy, followed by actors such as Anne Hathaway on the set of The Odyssey, is similar to resisting junk food in the middle of a meal.

“It’s like if someone’s eating a bag of chips off camera,” he remarked. “There’s certain things that just remind you’re in the real world, as opposed to the world we’re trying to create for the actors.”

Although the Interstellar director stressed that his stance isn’t a criticism of Uggs themselves; he simply doesn’t think they belong in the filmmaking process.
