Constipation problem and its causes

(Health Corner): Constipation is a common health problem, which is often caused by wrong eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle. When the level of Vata increases in the body, the problem of constipation arises. Bad eating habits, such as overeating, consuming heavy and difficult-to-digest foods, and lack of fruits and vegetables, lead to constipation. Additionally, emotions such as lack of sleep, stress, anxiety, or grief can also aggravate constipation. Any kind of blockage or lump in the intestines can also give rise to this problem.

Consuming fruits and vegetables to relieve constipation

Fruit: Citrus, orange, pear, watermelon, melon, peach, pineapple, tangerine, guava, papaya and raspberry, pomegranate.

Vegetables: Potato, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, capsicum, zucchini, tinda, gourd, parmal, carrot, fenugreek, radish, cucumber, spinach, lemon, mustard and bathua.

Ways to deal with constipation

It is beneficial to mix five percent black gram flour or bran in wheat flour to make roti.

Tips to relieve constipation:

Consume Gandharva Haritaki powder or Virechana powder with lukewarm water before sleeping. Take one spoon of Bilwadi powder with lukewarm water or mix two teaspoons of castor oil in lukewarm water or milk and drink it. Consuming Gulkand with milk in the morning and evening can also provide relief.

Fruit: Sapota, banana, apple, grapes, custard apple, litchi.

Vegetables: Arbi, okra, kachalu, yam, brinjal, groundnut, beetroot.

Pulses: Rajma, white chickpeas, whole urad, gram, soybean, cowpea (avoid these especially at night). Also limit the intake of cheese and ghee.

Constipation can be treated through doctor’s advice and proper training. It is necessary to improve eating habits. Consumption of green and fibrous vegetables as well as liquids like milk, fruit juice, and shikanji is beneficial. Regular exercise is also helpful in reducing this problem.
