Statement of Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly
Former Deputy CM of Tamil Nadu said- Tamil Thai Vazhathu should get the first place in any government program in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Session, Chennai: Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin has once again created controversy by talking about abolishing Sanatan Dharma. He gave a stern warning to Chief Minister Vijay regarding the Tamil Thai Vazhathu song. Udhayanidhi said in the Assembly on Tuesday that Sanatan Dharma should be abolished as it divides the society.
Udayanidhi’s controversial statement
Udhayanidhi had earlier also compared Sanatan Dharma to dengue and malaria. After this, in March 2025, the Supreme Court reprimanded him. He raised the issue of placing Tamil Thai Vazhathu at the third position in Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony and said that it should have been given priority.
Udhayanidhi said, “We will not tolerate this. Tamil Thai Vazhathu should be on the first place in any government program in Tamil Nadu.” In fact, at Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony on May 10, Vande Mataram and then Jana Gana Mana were played first, while the Tamil state anthem was played later.
Udhayanidhi’s earlier statements on Sanatan Dharma
Udhayanidhi had said in a program on 2 September 2023 that Sanatan Dharma is like mosquito, dengue, fever, malaria and corona, which cannot only be opposed, but it is necessary to eliminate them.
As the controversy escalated, he clarified that his target was not Hindu religion but Sanatan practice. He said that voices have been raised against this practice in Tamil Nadu for the last 100 years and they will continue to speak against it for the next 200 years also.
Supreme Court’s rebuke
On March 4, 2025, the Supreme Court had reprimanded Udhayanidhi Stalin and said that he had misused his powers. The court also said that Stalin should have thought about the consequences of his statements.
