FSSAI advisory: Strict ban on packing food in newspaper

FSSAI’s strict warning for food safety

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an important advisory for food business operators. In this directive, all street food vendors, restaurants and small shopkeepers have been ordered to stop using newspapers. FSSAI has warned that this practice of packing or serving food in newspapers is posing a serious threat to the health of consumers. This step has been taken after a recent incident in Mumbai.

Action against Vada Pav seller in Mumbai

According to sources, this advisory has been issued after action was taken against a famous vada pav vendor in Mumbai who was caught serving food to customers in newspaper. As soon as information about this violation was received, the team of FSSAI and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (MCGM) took strict legal action against the seller.

Why is it unsafe to use newspapers?

FSSAI said that newspaper coming in contact with food is dangerous for health. The ink used in newspaper printing contains many harmful chemicals and heavy metals. When hot and oily foods are wrapped in newspaper, these toxic elements get mixed into the food. This can result in serious health problems.

Danger of bacteria and dirt

There is not only a risk of chemicals from using newspapers, but there is also a risk of bacteria and dirt. Microorganisms and bacteria accumulate on the surface of newspapers, which can contaminate food.

Restrictions under Packaging Rules 2018

FSSAI has reminded all food businesses that this is not a new rule. The use of newspapers is prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. This rule applies to all types of food businesses.

Appeal to consumers to be cautious

FSSAI has urged consumers to be cautious about health and if any seller packs food in newspaper, then avoid buying food items from there. The central regulator plans to further strengthen inspection and enforcement in collaboration with food safety commissioners of all states.
