K Bhagyaraj Dies: Prominent personality of Tamil cinema, film producer, actor, writer and screenwriter. Bhagyaraj died at the age of 73. According to reports, he suffered a heart attack on 27 June 2026 in Chennai, due to which his life could not be saved. His sudden demise has left the Indian film industry and millions of his fans in deep shock.
Story of his contribution to Tamil cinema
Of. Bhagyaraj started his career as a screenwriter and rose to fame with the 1978 film ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in the lead roles. A year later, he turned director with ‘Suvarilladha Chithirangal’, in which he also played an important role.
Over a few decades, Bhagyaraj became one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Tamil cinema. He made many memorable films like ‘Mundhanai Mudichu’, ‘Mouna Geethangal’, ‘Chinna Veedu’, ‘Enga Chinna Rasa’, ‘Thural Ninnu Pochu’ and ‘Sundara Kaandam’. His unique style of storytelling and characters relatable to common people created a special place for him in the hearts of the audience.
His identity in Hindi cinema also
Of. Bhagyaraj also left his mark in Hindi cinema. He directed films like Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Aakhri Raasta’, Anil Kapoor and Sridevi’s ‘Mr Bechara’ and ‘Papa The Great’.
His last film was ‘Sidhu +2’ (2010), starring his son Shantanu Bhagyaraj. As an actor, his last appearance was in the 2025 film ‘BP 180’.
Awards and Honors
During his career, K. Bhagyaraj received many awards. He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer for ‘Puthiya Varappugal’ (1979) and the Filmfare Award South for Best Actor (Tamil) for ‘Mundhanai Mudichu’ (1983). Additionally, he was honored with the SIIMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 for his contribution to Indian cinema.
