When Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle were thrown out of the recording studio, the shocking story of the initial conflict came to light.
New Delhi. Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, two great singers of Indian music, gave countless memorable songs in their career, but before reaching this height of success, both of them also saw many difficult periods of struggle. An old memoir recently shared by Asha Bhosle brings out the challenges of her early days and the reality of the recording studio of that era. This story tells how his voice was once rejected and he had to return from the recording studio.
Asha Bhosle told during a conversation that in the early days of her career, she and Kishore Kumar had reached the studio for the recording of a song. Recording technology at that time was quite different from what it is today and artists had to practice and record for long periods of time. When both of them started singing, the recordist present there objected to their voices and clearly said that their voices were not suitable and other singers should be called. This comment was extremely disappointing for both of them.
According to Asha Bhosle, after hearing this, both of them came out of the studio without any dispute. At that time he was working very late and was also hungry. After this both of them reached the nearby railway station, where they had food and drank tea. Asha told that even in that difficult time, she did not let despair overpower her, whereas Kishore Kumar was quite hurt and angry by this incident.
With time, both the artists created a distinct identity in the music world on the basis of their talent. Years later, during another recording, he met the same recordist who had once rejected his voice. Asha Bhosle told that as soon as Kishore Kumar saw her, he remembered the old incident. He proceeded to talk to her and also expressed his displeasure. However, Asha explained to him that no one’s job or respect should be affected because of an old incident. After his explanation the situation became normal.
During the conversation, Asha Bhosle also mentioned her friendship and close relationship with Kishore Kumar. He told that in the initial days both of them used to record many songs together. During the recording, Kishore Kumar would often joke and tease her by calling her different names. With time, a deep friendship developed between the two and this easy relationship was later visible in their songs as well.
He also told that Kishore Kumar was very versatile. He was not only a singer but also an actor, musician, producer, writer and filmmaker. According to Asha, she could guess his mood just by the way he wore it. If he came wearing white kurta, dhoti and cap, she would understand that he was in a good mood, whereas if he came with simple clothes or messy hair, she would talk less. Despite this, there was always an affectionate brother-sister relationship between the two.
The duo of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle later gave many classic songs to Hindi cinema. This incident of his struggle is an example of the fact that initial failures do not decide the ultimate identity of an artist. On the basis of talent, patience and continuous hard work, both of them registered their names in golden letters in the history of Indian music.
