The demand for a permanent High Court bench in Barak Valley got public support, more than 300 people signed it in Sribhoomi.

An important public awareness meeting was organized at Bipin Pal Smriti Bhawan in Shribhoomi district today, Saturday, June 27, in support of the demand for setting up a permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court of Assam at a suitable place in Barak Valley. In this meeting organized on the initiative of Dr. Sabyasachi Rai, Principal of Rabindra Sadan College, the constitutional requirement of a permanent High Court bench in Barak Valley, equal access to justice and various aspects of turning this demand into an organized mass movement were discussed in detail.

The meeting started with the welcome address of Nikhil Pal, General Secretary, High Court Bench Demand Implementation Committee. Expressing his gratitude to Dr. Sabyasachi Rai for organizing this important event, he said that active participation of all sections of the society is necessary to fulfill this long standing just demand of the people of Barak Valley. He said that such awareness meetings play an important role in creating public opinion.

In the meeting, former MP Mission Ranjan Das, former Principal of Karimganj College Radhika Ranjan Chakraborty, Chairman of the Central Committee of Banga Sahitya and Sanskriti Sammelan Satu Rai, cultural personality Sulekha Dutt Chaudhary, Professor Vishwatosh Chaudhary, educationist Vibhash Dev, General Secretary Nikhil Pal, Rasraj Das, Dharmanand Dev, Advocate Devomita Chakraborty, Advocate Tuhina Sharma, Advocate Durga Purkayastha, Advocate Archana Dutt and many others from the district. Dignitaries were present. Apart from this, representatives of various social, cultural and theatrical organizations also participated in the discussion.

Speakers said that lakhs of people of Barak Valley have to travel long distances to Guwahati for justice, which is extremely costly, time consuming and difficult. Many people are deprived of effective access to justice due to economic and geographical barriers. Therefore, establishment of a permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court at a suitable place in the Barak Valley is the need of the hour and is in line with the principles of equality and justice enshrined in the Constitution.

He also clarified that this is not a regional or political demand, but a reasonable demand to ensure the right of citizens to constitutional justice. This demand has received wide support from all sections of the Barak Valley and the government and concerned authorities were appealed to take positive steps in this direction soon.

At the end of the meeting, a signature campaign was conducted in support of the establishment of a permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court, in which more than 300 citizens registered their support. This was considered a proof of the public’s widespread support for this demand.

In the meeting, the demand for soon establishing a permanent High Court bench in Barak Valley was reiterated and all sections of the society were called upon to further strengthen this mass movement in a democratic and constitutional manner.
