Alcohol consumption in summer: serious effects on health

Health effects of alcohol in summer

Consumption of alcohol in summer: When temperatures are skyrocketing and there is humidity in the environment, consuming alcohol can be extremely harmful to health. Drinking alcohol in summer not only increases dehydration, but it can also cause heat stroke and other serious health problems.

According to experts, even a little carelessness in this season can have serious consequences. Alcohol is considered a diuretic drink, which removes water from the body rapidly. Frequent urination after drinking alcohol is normal even on normal days. But in summer, when the body is already losing water through sweat, alcohol increases this loss.

Serious consequences of dehydration

risk of dehydration

If vomiting occurs along with alcohol consumption, the deficiency of essential salt and electrolytes along with water in the body further increases. Due to this, symptoms like fatigue, weakness, dizziness and dry mouth appear quickly.

increased risk of heat stroke

risk of heat stroke

The body’s natural cooling system is sweating. The body expels heat through sweat. But when dehydration occurs, sweat production reduces, due to which the body temperature cannot be controlled and it starts increasing rapidly. This condition leads to heat stroke.

Initial symptoms of heat stroke include severe headache, dizziness, confusion, extreme thirst and weakness. Later, fainting, seizures or body temperature reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit may also occur. In such a situation, medical help should be sought immediately. Delay can be fatal.

What to do and what not to do

precautions

People who drink alcohol in summer should first understand that it is necessary to drink adequate amount of water. Along with alcohol, also take things like plain water, salt-sugar solution (ORS), coconut water or buttermilk. Avoid walking in direct sunlight, driving or going to crowded places after drinking alcohol. After drinking alcohol, the body becomes hotter than before, so it is better to stay in a cool place with air conditioner. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol. If you already have any disease like high blood pressure, heart disease or kidney problem, then completely avoid alcohol in summer.
