Plastic pollution and its effects on health

growing plastic crisis

The use of plastic bags and garbage is increasing rapidly around the world, which has become a serious problem for the environment. This plastic is becoming a threat not only to the dumb animals but also to the health of humans. Every year millions of tonnes of plastic waste gets into land and water sources, which gradually turns into microscopic particles called microplastics. These particles are directly entering the bodies of humans and animals through food items and water, posing a serious threat to their lives.

effects on animals

Plastic bags are scattered everywhere on the roads and in garbage heaps, which are proving fatal for stray animals, especially cows. These animals also eat plastic plates in the garbage. According to data from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), doctors have operated and removed up to 70 kg of plastic from the stomachs of cows.

Health effects of plastic

Plastic entering the body is causing serious health problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report on the impact of microplastics in drinking water, stating that it can cause many life-threatening diseases. The chemicals used in making plastic cause serious harm to the body, which increases the risk of cancer, diabetes and liver related diseases.
