Diabetes: a serious health problem
Diabetes is a serious health problem, which affects millions of people. In this condition, the body either does not produce enough insulin or is unable to use it properly, resulting in increased glucose levels in the blood. A medicine called metformin is used to control diabetes.
Method of action of metformin
This medicine is helpful in controlling the sugar level in the blood. We discussed this topic with Dr. Mahesh D.M., Senior Consultant, Department of Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru.
How does metformin control sugar?
In patients with type 2 diabetes, the liver produces more glucose. Metformin helps reduce this production, thereby maintaining balanced blood sugar levels. It also increases sensitivity to insulin, allowing muscles and other tissues to function better.
How to take metformin?
Consumption of metformin depends on the dosage prescribed by the doctor, but it is generally recommended to take it with or immediately after food. Taking it does not cause problems like nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and diarrhea.
Does metformin affect the liver?
Metformin primarily acts on the liver and also affects other organs. It stops the production of glucose in the liver, thereby reducing the sugar level in the blood.
How does metformin work?
Recent studies have found that metformin reduces the activity of a protein called Rap1 present in the brain. This activates SF1 neurons in the hypothalamus, which help reduce glucose levels in the blood.
