Unique ID for doctors: NMC's new rules

NMC announces new rules

The National Medical Commission (NMC) plans to implement a unique ID number for doctors. This ID will be helpful in collecting the doctor's education, registration and professional information. Its main objective is to identify correct information and make it easier to identify fake doctors. NMC has prepared new draft rules in this regard.

Every doctor will get a unique ID

Every registered doctor will get a unique ID in the National Medical Register. Under this proposal, a national digital record of doctors will also be created, which will include information about registration, license status and disciplinary action. This record will be available online, which patients and hospitals can view.

Validity of practice license

This unique ID will be valid in the entire country, so that doctors will be able to provide treatment anywhere. Already registered doctors will also be given this ID, but for this they will have to update their records. According to the draft rules, the validity of the practice license will be five years, after which renewal will be required.

Registration process

According to IMA Director Anil Nayak, a unified pan India registration portal will be developed. States which already have digital registration system will be linked to this national portal.

UID for old doctors

A one-time update campaign will be conducted for doctors who are already registered in the Indian Medical Register or State Medical Register but do not have a UID. They will be able to get UID by updating their information on the EMRB portal. No fee will be charged for this process.

Centralization of doctor information

After creation of the central record, all the information including disciplinary action taken against the doctor, license status will be available at one place. If there is a complaint against a doctor, the concerned State Medical Council will investigate it.
