Essential tips and tricks for growing bean pods

Growing trend of growing bean pods

Nowadays, people have become aware of the pesticides and chemicals present in the vegetables available in the market. For this reason, the trend of home gardening is increasing rapidly. People are growing their essential vegetables in the balcony, terrace or any small corner of their house.

If you are also planning to grow vegetables at home, bean pods can be an excellent option. This vine vegetable can be easily grown in less space and maintains freshness for a long time with proper care.

facility to grow in less space

Growing beans does not require large fields. You can also grow it in a big pot on the terrace, balcony or courtyard.

Since the roots of beans spread, it would be advisable to choose a pot at least 12 to 15 inches deep and wide. It is necessary to have a drainage hole at the bottom of the pot, so that excess water does not accumulate.

Preparing soil for plants

It is very important to have the right mixture of soil for good yield. The soil for bean plants should be kept loose and rich in nutrients.

You can make soil mixture in this way-

• 50 percent normal garden soil

• 30 percent vermicompost or old cow dung manure.

• 20 percent sand

This mixture maintains the balance of moisture and air in the soil, due to which the roots of the plant develop well.

Preparation before planting seeds

It can be beneficial to soak the bean seeds in water for about 6 to 8 hours before planting them in the soil. Due to this the seeds germinate quickly.

After this, plant the seeds at a depth of about 1 to 1.5 inches in the soil of the pot and add light soil on top. After planting the seeds, give some water.

Under the right conditions, small plants begin to grow within about 5 to 8 days.

balance of sunlight and water

Bean vine requires good sunlight. Place the pot in a place where the plant can get sunlight for about 5 to 6 hours daily.

While watering, keep in mind that the soil should remain moist, but do not add more water than necessary. It is better to give light water only when the upper soil of the pot feels dry.

support the vine

When the bean plant grows to about 6 to 8 inches high, it needs support. You can put wooden sticks, bamboo or creeper net in the pot.

Slowly let the vine climb this support. By providing adequate space to the vine, its spread improves and the chances of producing flowers and pods also increases.

use of natural fertilizers

For good growth of the plant, two handfuls of vermicompost can be added to the soil once a month after light hoeing.

If small insects like aphids are seen on the plant, a light solution of neem oil can be sprayed instead of chemical pesticides.

first harvest of beans

The plant may begin flowering approximately 45 to 60 days after planting the seeds. After this, pods gradually start forming.

Generally, green bean pods can be ready for harvesting about 70 to 80 days after planting.

It is best to harvest the pods when they are green, fresh and soft. If overcooked, the beans can become hard and the taste can also be affected.

continuity of freshness

If the plant gets adequate sunlight, the right amount of water and natural fertilizer from time to time, the bean vine can continue to produce beans throughout the season.

Home-grown fresh beans will not only make the kitchen garden greener, but can also reduce the need to buy vegetables from the market.
