CBFC reorganized with new members
The Government of India has reorganized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), inducting 18 new members. The new panel includes several leading actors, filmmakers, and musicians from the entertainment and cultural sectors. The reconstituted board includes prominent names like Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi, Suniel Shetty, Rupali Ganguly, Pallavi Joshi and Prosenjit Chatterjee. Filmmaker Priyadarshan and Grammy Award-winning musician Ricky Cage are also part of the board.

Role of CBFC
CBFC not only determines whether a film can be released or not, but also offers different certification categories depending on the content of the film. These include: U (for public performance without restrictions), UA (with age-appropriate caution), A (for adult audiences) and S (for special audiences). New age-based categories have been added under the UA category in the 2024 certification rules, such as UA 7+, UA 13+ and UA 16+.
The certification process involves an 'Examining Committee', while a 'Revising Committee' can review the film if the producers or the board are dissatisfied with the decision of the Examining Committee. The formation of these revising committees was discussed at the CBFC's meeting held on August 29, which was the first meeting of the board in six years. Members sought information about the persons who have headed these committees for successive years in recent years.
