Bill Gates' warning on AI
New Delhi – Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new turning point in technological revolutions and that society is completely unprepared for its potentially huge changes.
Gates emphasized the unique capabilities of AI and presented India as an example of how this technology can be used for social and developmental benefits. “It's an amazing set of capabilities,” he said. India can set an example of how to rapidly advance positive uses of AI.
In a conversation with a media channel, Gates suggested that if the pace of AI development could be slowed down a bit, it could give society more time to prepare for its effects. He said AI is different from previous technologies like personal computers and the Internet. Gates warned that it would be a mistake to assume that managing the impacts of AI will be as easy as other technologies.
Gates said that the development of AI has been so fast and widespread that despite being a supporter of innovation, even he has been forced to question its speed. He said, “If we can slow down its pace a little, then we should consider it, because it is necessary to be prepared for such a big and rapid change.”
Gates described cybersecurity as one of the most significant threats related to AI. He warned that AI-based tools could enhance the capabilities of cyber attackers. “In the near future, AI tools may make attackers more capable,” he said. Security systems also need to evolve at the same pace.
Gates also discussed whether more capable AI systems will always be able to remain under human control in the future. He said the issue of keeping AI under control has long been a concern, but recent examples of reinforcement learning-based systems have shown unpredictable behavior, raising new questions.
