Semicon India 2026 is being organized at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi to promote semiconductor technology and manufacturing in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this three-day program on September 17. The event will run till September 19 and will see the participation of global companies, investors, researchers, startups, academicians and technology experts from the semiconductor industry.
This year the theme of the program has been 'Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem'. Its focus is not limited to chip manufacturing only, but on design, manufacturing, packaging, research, talent and strengthening the entire supply chain.
More than 600 companies are taking part
More than 600 companies are participating in Semicon India 2026. About 300 international companies are included in these. Representatives from 52 countries, more than 400 executives and more than 150 speakers are included in the program. According to the organizers, around 50 thousand visitors are expected.
Six country pavilions of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden have been built in the program. Apart from this, 12 State Pavilions, Startup Pavilion, Innovation Showcase, Student Hackathon and Workforce Development Pavilion are also part of it.
What did PM Modi say about the semiconductor sector?
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on India's rapidly developing semiconductor ecosystem. He said that India is now moving towards increasing its capacity in the semiconductor value chain and the aim of taking the chips made in the country to the global markets is important. He also stressed the need to increase investment in research, design and new technology.
According to the government, along with manufacturing, work is also being done on chip design, advanced packaging, machinery, material and talent development for the semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Focus from design to manufacturing in Semicon 2.0
The Government of India has also approved the next phase of Semicon 2.0. According to PIB, with an outlay of Rs 1.275 lakh crore, the focus will be on areas like research and development, chip design, machines and materials, new fabs, talent development and strengthening the ATMP/OSAT sector.
Its objective is to make the semiconductor value chain in India more comprehensive, so that the country is not limited to just chip design or assembly and can develop its capabilities in different parts of the ecosystem.
Emphasis on powerful and energy-efficient chips in the era of AI
With the rapidly increasing use of AI, the demand for high capacity and low energy consumption chip technology is increasing. Topics related to AI infrastructure and advanced semiconductor technology are also being discussed in Semicon India 2026.
Many global companies including Applied Materials are showcasing their role and technological capabilities in India's semiconductor ecosystem. The company is the silicon sponsor of Semicon India 2026 and Prabu Raja, President of its Semiconductor Products Group, spoke on India's role in the event.
Technology showcase from AI Edge to Robotics
Along with semiconductor related technologies, technologies like AI Edge, Industrial Automation, Robotics, Security Surveillance and Memory Storage are also being demonstrated in the event.
