Millets: A Boon for Health

Nutrition Powerhouse

Powerhouse of Nutrition: In today's fast-paced lifestyle, coarse grains, called millets, are proving to be an invaluable resource for our health. Obesity, diabetes and heart diseases are increasing rapidly due to poor diet and lack of physical activity. In such a situation, consuming millets is extremely beneficial.

Coarse grains mainly include millet, ragi (madua), jowar, foxtail millet, kodo and sawan.

Following are some of the major reasons why these grains are essential for you in your busy lifestyle:

Rich in nutrients:
Millets are rich in important minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. For example, the amount of calcium in ragi is more than that of milk, which strengthens bones.

Sustainable source of energy:
People often experience fatigue in busy routines. Millets contain complex carbohydrates, which are digested slowly. Due to this, the body gets energy for a long time and does not feel hungry again and again.

Better digestion:
Problems of constipation and indigestion become common due to working sitting at one place for hours. Millets contain high fiber, which keeps the digestive system healthy and cleanses the stomach.

For breakfast: You can make ragi cheela, idli, dosa or millet porridge.
Lunch/Dinner: Eat jowar or bajra missi roti instead of wheat roti, or make kodo/sawan khichdi instead of rice.
Snacks: Roasted Kangni or puffs of millets (like makhana or popcorn).
